Position Title: Mgr Data and Software Services

External Description:

The Manager, Database and Software Services primary responsibility is for database oversight (SQL and Oracle), but will also support technology software across Talbots’ infrastructure. While being a skilled, hands-on technical manager, this position will have direct reports supporting SQL Server, Oracle DB, Middleware (JBoss/IIS), Microstrategy, Informatica, DB2, and other technical ancillary software products to support IT infrastructure needs. This position requires a high level of technical understanding, database management skills, process improvements, and the ability to oversee multiple projects at the same time. This position also manages a hybrid mix of on-site and offshore resources.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

This is a leadership position responsible for database oversight with the ability to provide technical guidance for multiple DBA and technology engineer direct reports. The database group is responsible for multiple database engines including SQL Server, Oracle and DB2. The predominant database is SQL Server so the individual needs to bring extensive experience in that engine, while also possessing conceptual knowledge of database theory to help manage other database management systems.

• Provide direction on overall database strategy. Understanding of Cloud-based database services for future analysis and ability to provide recommendations based on that analysis
• Collaborate with application teams during development to recommend best practices based upon database technologies. Stay current with changing technologies
• Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time. Lead projects to upgrade databases, middleware, technology software upgrades (i.e., Bitvise clients, Autosys, PGP, DB2 Tools etc.)
• Manage associates and projects where the administration, installation, configuration, troubleshooting, deployment and upgrading of middleware technologies are needed
• Have database and software license management with a strong Microsoft licensing understanding
• Work with the DBAs and security team (ISSP) to maintain database security and integrity, including applying Microsoft, IBM and Oracle security patches to ensure compliance by keeping current with security best practices
• Participate in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process for infrastructure services and database products
• Support application teams by providing technical information to vendors regarding the technology component of their request
• Review current database monitoring procedures, implement standards across all environments, and recommend tools if needed for tuning/monitoring
• Prepare estimates for complex projects to provide management with information needed to accurately forecast project delivery dates
• Provide production support to existing systems
• Establish and maintain actionable metrics for the department
• Assist in the mentoring and training and development of others

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in IS/Computer Science or related discipline
• 10+ years’ experience with SQL Server, administration, installation, upgrades and configuration in HA environments
• 6-8 years of progressively more responsible work experience
• 5 years’ experiencing managing a staff of Database Administrators and technical engineers
• 5 years’ experience managing projects
• Experience in SQL Server Clustering and HA technologies including mirroring, log shipping, failover cluster and various replication technologies
• Knowledge of Application Servers: Red Hat JBoss, IIS would be an advantage
• Operating System knowledge: Linux (Redhat), Windows (2008, 2012, etc.)
• Oracle or DB2 administration is a plus
• Experience working with Server and Application monitoring tools (Dynatrace, Splunk) would be an advantage
• Extensive DR experience including design and testing functionality
• On-Premise facility and cloud environment design, implementation and support
• Vendor relationship management
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal and collaborative skills
• Familiarity with SDM templates and methodology
• Accepting of managing a 24x7 on call rotation
• MCSA SQL certification preferred
