Position Title: Merchant-Outlet

External Description:

Basic Purpose: 

Responsible for developing the merchandise assortment for Talbots Outlet stores that meet the financial goals and fit the customer taste level and expectations.  In addition, this position participates in the development of products, developing and monitoring financial plans and supervising one or two assistant buyers.

Principal Accountabilities:

• Analyze core Missy selling and select apparel consistent with Talbots Outlet customer clientele, place orders according to merchandise plans and monitor for financial accountability for a department.
• Develop financial plans on a quarterly and seasonal basis consistent with Talbots goals.  Identify growth opportunities in product lines.  Work with Planners to analyze past performance through product recap and analysis, style and price evaluations, timing of delivery, and knowledge of our customer base.
• Participate in the development of Talbots Outlet styles.  Communicate with the Sourcing Department and provide them with detailed input necessary for development.  Provide alternative strategies concerning styling and fabric to meet cost targets.
• Develop mark-up and set target prices for merchandise.
• Implement merchandise plans and classification plans by monitoring sales and style performance.  Identify areas of improvement by analyzing the flow of merchandise, markdown timing and promotional activity
• Follow through with the technical staff on quality or production problems.
• Manage the open to buy (OTB) process. 
• Hire, train, review and supervise the daily activities of staff.
• Develop assortment plans for visual presentation in stores and communicate with Visual Manager and stores on assortment direction.

 

 Education/Experience/Knowledge:

 

• Knowledge of and experience in buying clothing for a division or a group of departments at a level normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree
•  8-10 years of progressively more responsible work experience
•  Exposure to planning and distribution and overseas manufacturers required
• Must be able to travel
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
